The Madame Chiang Project utilizes a humanities-based approach to: (1) examine the day-to-day occurrences of Madame Chiang Kai-Shek’s 1943 visit to Los Angeles and its impacts on the Chinese American community (via a photo tour format); (2) examine the impact of the sociopolitical circumstances of the 1930s and 1940s on the local, national, and global level that impacted Chinese Americans and the subsequently impacted Los Angeles Chinatown (via a narrative life history format); and (3) examine the history of American perceptions of Chinese Americans, in order to examine the paradoxical and often conflicting images that were substantially embellished in movies and other media outlets, as opposed to personal contact (via a newspaper database research format).
